Blog#2 UN-100

Ø Describe your ideal Instructor/Professor. - Helpful, informative, and someone you can feel comfortable asking question to.

Ø “I knew it when I studied it, but I forgot it on the test.” How can students study differently to prevent this from happening? - Maybe try studying earlier on, and not as much. If you study over a long period of time in shorter intervals i feel alot more gets memorized.

Ø How do you study for quizzes/tests? - I go over notes, along with the chapter. I have someone ask me questions out of the chapter... sometimes using flash cards, not often though.

Ø What do you have trouble with on quizzes/tests? - When there seems like there could be more than one right answer i.e. multiple choice.

Also, read this short excerpt--

I was shocked: For coffee drinkers, it would seem fairly safe to just grab a quick cup of coffee at McDonalds on the way to work. But many health conscious people would object to it also including this list of ingredients: sodium phosphate, sodium polyphosphate, Di-Acetyl Tartrate Ester of Monoglyceride, sodium stearoyl lactylate, tetra sodium pyrophosphate, sodium hexametaphosphate, sodium citrate, and carrageenan.http://rinf.com/alt-news/culture/surprise-ingredients-in-fast-food/1654/Some of these food additives are not foods at all, but are chemicals that are generally recognized as safe. Most of these additives cannot be found at your local grocery store, probably because they aren’t food. But some can be found at your local hardware store, though in inedible products like low tox antifreeze, silicone caulk, soap, sunscreen, and play sand.(This website is used only for citation purposes - you don't have to go there, unless you want to. Caution: It's scary!)

Finally - Do you feel as if there is any healthy fast food available to consumers? If so, where and why? Give specific examples of products.. Please be honest and support your opinions. For example, I feel that Subway's Veggie Sub is healthy due to its freshly-cut produce, cheese, and "fresh-baked" breads. I actually talked to a friend who works at Subway and he said in MQT, they slice their own produce. (My fear was that it arrived pre-sliced and filled with preservatives). It's not organic, but it's a start.

Yes. I believe it is all healthy, it is the consumers who are not healthy. The food they serve you has to make some sort of standards otherwise it would be illigal. If you are going to eat fast food you have to understand your consequences... if you eat 2 big macs, a large fry, and a 5 pack of nuggets and sit around the rest of the day, of course the food is going to be unhealthy for you. I will say its not your ideal food to eat because of its low nutritional value but you can still eat it and stay healthy; its called excersizing. Fast food consumes consumers because people are becoming more lazy and fast food is becoming more convenient.

Blog#1 - UN100

Ø List your own quote, favorite saying, song, or other expression of your feelings today. " Hvis Lyset Tar Oss" ("where the light may guide/take us" in Norwegian, taken from a Burzum album title).

Ø List initial observations of your new environment. Way different than highschool, lots of different people, short classes, everything is on your own. I love it.

Ø List initial observations of your classes. Fairly laid back, good professors and T.A.'s, i wasn't very worried.

Ø What observations have you made about other students? Most of the people i have came acrossed so far have been kept to themselves for the most part. Lots of different "styles" and what not. People have also been really friendly, its a whole different feel from high school.

Ø About your instructors? Dr. Lindsay seems pretty cool, Dr. Grugin is not very interesting, Mr. Clancy is a t.a. and pretty helpful, and kelly seems pretty rad.

Ø What do you think will be your biggest challenge(s) academically this semester? I have a feeling my biology lab is going to be tough... I can do thing that are hands on but it just takes me a while to catch on to what we are doing, i tend to fall behind.

Ø Reiterate a term or concept you learned in Anatomy this week. I don't have anatomy.... but in biology we learned that Ph levels in water are easily changed by Acids (add more protons to the water) and bases (remove protons from the water) but buffers (both accept and donate protons) can make the Ph level change less drastic when added to the mixture.

Ø List a few pleasant events that happened during your first weeks at NMU. I made some new friends, stayed on top in all of my classes, figured my financial aid out, and i'm trying out for bass in a hardcore band (not my first choice of music, but i've been bandless for too long).

Ø List habits you already possess that make you successful in college. I take good notes, I'm staying organized!, and I'm normally always on time, if not early.

Ø List habits (timewasters?) you can change or modify, or need to lose. I like to stay up late on the computer, I play call of duty: world at war A LOT!!!, I write and record a lot of music too... the music part i don't think I'll change, but i do need to fit it into my schedule better than i have been.

Ø Explain how you determine what to write down in notes during lectures. I tend to write whatever is on the over head, or if something new comes up that i have never heard before i will write that down too. Also a lot of the time my professors say something like "This is something you should know" or something along those lines, and I'll write down whatever that something is.

Ø Based on your first readings in the TCB text, describe the differences between Active Learning & Passive Learning (reading, note-taking, etc..) I am still waiting on my books in the mail :/

Ø Based on your first readings in the BT text, list TWO of favorite quotes and explain why they "speak" to you. Again, Still no books. I have fast food nation, the other two are on their way (hopefully).

Ø Finally, name one goal (personal, academic, etc..) you have for yourself next week. I hope to finish recording for my solo black metal project. It is a pain in the ass recording every instrument separately on your own, and it has been taking a decent amount of time to finish up on it.
